When I first started art school I would say, ‘Art is everything.’
What an idiot.
It took me four months to realize art is not everything, yet I could somehow differentiate between what was art and what was not. How could that be, seeing as I had no prior education nor any reasoning to suggest my ideas were correct?
The saying ‘Art is what you want it to be’, was once something I’d scribble down in my notebooks and sketchpads. Now, when I hear that phrase, it takes every inch of my being not to whack the person who said it in the mouth.
Art had suddenly turned from being ‘everything’ to nothing. It’s as if it’s just a title put onto things created or assembled (sometimes neither) by a single person. Then a group of beings with ‘higher power’, whom seem to stay anonymous, decide how to evaluate something as art. They first classify the said object (Art, or not?) and then they hold the authority to say whether or not this is good or bad art; whether it is totally pointless and it’s existence isn’t necessary, or if it will be sold for millions of dollars.
All because they said so.
This can’t be right….
I’m throwing this question out into the grand ol’ universe that is the internet, and am hoping someone, somewhere, will have some sort of insight for me….
…What is art?
